Belarus starts mass cryptocurrency confiscations

The Investigative Committee of the Republic of Belarus has already seized digital assets worth more than $38.5 million.

According to the ONT TV channel, the head of the Investigative Committee of Belarus, Dmitri Gora, said that the confiscated funds were used to compensate for the damage caused to the state: “We had faced this issue not long ago, when cryptocurrency first emerged as a means of payment for drugs. Then we got economic crimes involving cryptocurrency,” - stressed the head of the Committee. - “As a result, I can boast that we have probably already crossed the threshold of a hundred million rubles, amounts that are already deposited in the accounts and deposits of the Investigative Committee as normal money.”

Recall that cases of cryptocurrency confiscation from Belarusians have occurred before. So, in 2018, the authorities confiscated 1.2 thousand bitcoins worth almost $5 million from a Belarusian citizen. It was reported that the perpetrator was engaged in stealing bank card data and acted as an intermediary in illegal transactions.
