Reuters: Binance laundered $2.35 billion worth of cryptocurrency

The news agency claims that the crypto exchange has been actively processing illegal transactions, including those linked to the darknet website Hydra and the North Korean group Lazarus.

According to an article posted by Reuters, Binance processed at least $2.35 billion in transactions involving illegal activity from 2017 to 2021. The agency used court records, law enforcement statements, and blockchain information. The cryptocurrency exchange countered that it did not consider the estimates to be accurate and refused to provide its own data.

For instance, over the past five years, both buyers and sellers of the darknet website Hydra used Binance to make and receive payments worth $780 million. Crystal Blockchain reported this information, and the reps of another analytics company agreed with this data.

The agency also claimed that the North Korean hacker group Lazarus used Binance to launder cryptocurrency. Meanwhile, German police reported that offenders in Europe laundered funds through the cryptocurrency exchange, affecting victims with a total loss of €750 million ($800 million).

Recently, another news broke out saying that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was investigating whether the Binance crypto exchange had violated securities law during the initial sale of Binance Coin's own tokens in 2017.
