Wikipedia wants to drop cryptocurrency donations

More than 70% of online encyclopedia members opposed further cryptocurrency donations.

According to the online vote, arguments for the ban claimed that there were still environmental issues raised over the impact of cryptocurrencies. The adoption of cryptocurrencies was also mentioned as an implicit endorsement of cryptocurrency-related problems.

The arguments against the ban included the availability of more "green" cryptocurrencies based on the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) algorithm and the security of donations originating from authoritarian countries. The counterarguments included the fact that traditional currencies are also harmful to the environment.

According to Wikipedia officials, the website in the last fiscal year received just over $130,100 in cryptocurrency donations. In fact, cryptocurrency accounted for only 0.08% of all other contributions. Following the vote, the poll organizers demanded that the Wikimedia Foundation stop receiving donations in digital currencies.
